Maine moose population is estimated to be at
29,000 animals. The average harvest numbers each year range from
2,000 to 2,400 for a hunter success rate around 85%. The moose is
Maine’s largest big game animal with adult cows weighing 600 lbs and
adult bulls 800 lbs dressed. Each year adult bulls weighing in excess
of 1,000 lbs. are taken. The main diet of a moose consists of woody
browse from willow, aspen, birch, maple, and mountain ash. An adult
will consume as much as 65 lbs. per day. Todays logging practices
promote the re-growth of the vital needs of a moose resulting in a
stable herd.
Western Maine where we hunt is the most mountainous part of Maine. Wood
harvesting is at an all time high in our area, which produces some prime moose habitat. Our
hunts take place mostly in zone 7, 12, 13, but we also have zones 2, 3, 5, 6, that we hunt from outpost camps. We use numerous techniques including spot
and stalk and calling to put our hunters on there quarry. Hunters should be
prepared to hunt on foot...we do not spend all day in a truck. Our fully
guided hunts consist of one guide to two hunters (permitee and sub-permitee),
lodging, meals, transportation and game care. Our semi-guided hunts consist of
lodging, maps and instructions for the area. Game retrieval and care may be
obtained for an extra fee on our semi-guided hunt.
